The Configuration B high-intensity runway guard light is used where a taxiway crosses a runway or at the runway-holding position; its alternately flashing yellow light warns aircraft and vehicles that they are about to enter an active runway. The conspicuous warning signal makes the runway entrance easier to recognize in difficult weather, at night and in low visibility, and lowers the risk of a runway incursion.
