Used as an approach centerline light, the fixtures are set along the extended runway centerline and indicate the direction of the runway center with a continuous, conspicuous light signal, helping pilots establish and hold the approach path accurately. Used as a crossbar light, the fixtures are set perpendicular to the approach centerline and form a distinct lateral light marking that gives pilots a direct position and distance reference, helps them judge where the aircraft is relative to the runway centerline and the runway threshold, and improves visual recognition during the approach.
